From Wires to User hands, this TD Project aimed to make an Ambassador of 80,000 employees across all departments and business lines. Submit ideas, empower yourself with knowledge, and become a TD advocate off the clock. This all-in-one app discovered what was possible, what was actually wanted, and what could be built in a very short timeline.
Role: Product Designer
With TD’s idea generating platform built by technology partner, Imaginatik, launching in late 2018, TD decided a native app experience needed to be created in order to allow employees to “Bleed Green” outside of work and especially, outside the TD Network.
I was the main product designer on a team of 4 who was tasked with this very large task:
Package the Imaginatik mobile web platform, iD8, into a native experience that is seamless and engaging.
Include an Acronym Dictionary and a real-time Customer Feedback intake platform to round out the “Ambassador” experience.
Collaborate closely with the Development team to create the apps in iOS and Android simultaneously.
Discover, Design, and Deliver in early 2019 to match with the iD8 platform roll out
Discovery
During the Discovery phase, I operated as a main Product Designer in charge of creating, owning, and maintaining the wireframes that were produced after collaborative design sessions with the Product, Delivery Managers, and Tech teams. Discovery was broken up into 2 weeks sprints, each focusing on major aspects of the app design.
Collaborative Design
Lead crossfunctional team of product owners, delivery managers, and development teams through design workshops aimed at collaboratively designing and collectively aligning on the end product solution.
Wireframe Design
Create wireframes based on design workshop sketches and team feedback.
Interaction Design
Create clickable prototype to establish interaction specifics and demo to additional project members.
Research
During Research, I worked closely with the TD Research team in order to establish a testing protocol and perform testing sessions with 25 TD employees across all branches of the organization.
Feedback was then distilled to a recommendation to be presented to an executive steering committee who would decide on what direction to take the project during the next phase and round of funding.
Production: The Pivot
Research findings had brought up some major issues over the initial product strategy of connecting these seemingly random ideas into one cohesive app experience. Very few users understood why an ideation platform, an acronym dictionary, and a mobile customer service feature gelled together. The feedback was very clear, people had yet to understand what iD8 was because the platform had not yet launched to the company, an Acronym Dictionary was very useful but they wanted it separately not only as a mobile app, but as a desktop app as well, and lastly, MyVoice (our customer service feature) was not wanted at all.
A pivot was recommended. Isolate the iD8 platform by creating a custom browser that acted as a mobile solution launching alongside the desktop platform. Create the Acronym Dictionary as a standalone app that can be enhanced in the future to include a desktop experience. Lastly, do not proceed with the MyVoice feature. Users did NOT want to be the responsible for the complaints of their friends and family.
My role changed at this point. Previously part of a team, I was tasked with being the sole Product Designer overseeing the production of the iOS and Android App, as well as working alongside an additional Android Developer to rapidly prototype a working version of the Acronym App. During this time I did the following:
id8 Delivery
Leverage existing TD app design system as well as native design patterns per device in order to deliver high fidelity mockups to iOS and Android development teams.
Support development teams throughout each delivery sprint to adjust designs on an ad-hoc basis.
Provide final design sign-off on finished product
Acronym Dictionary Prototyping
Perform design discovery to establish a new, fresher, TD app look and feel.
Work closely with a single Android developer to design and develop in parallel in order to fit within a miniscule production budget.
Big Wins:
Established new collaboration methods between TD and remote Technology teams in London and Waterloo by implementing Adobe XD and utilizing their clickable prototype and design specs cloud sharing.
Created, implemented and maintained Wireframe and UI Master files / prototypes.
Took over as Lead Designer as the project pivoted sharply into standalone iD8 and Acronym Dictionary Apps.
Redefined and implemented a refreshed TD apps design system for the Acronym Dictionary.
Engaged in a truly lean delivery method with Android developer to deliver the Acronym Dictionary in record time and under budget.
